Free mobile phone unlocking (nokia anyway)
This might not be news to most people but I still thought you needed a dodgy looking man with a special cable to unlock most mobile phones. Seems not.
Now I’m on my Sony Erricsson k800i SWMBO has been eyeing up my old nokia 6230 (which has been a great phone once I got the bloody firmware upgraded). Unfortunately, the 6230 was locked to orange who wanted 20 quid to unlock it. Sod that, I’d given Orange more than enough cash already so I was going to pay someone else to do it. After a bit of googling I discovered that for a lot of phones unlocking is now as simple as typing in a magic number at the right time - a number I guess is generated from some algorithm
Anyway, a couple of minutes with this site and my old 6230 is now happily on Tesco elcheapo network. Excellent.
In other news, Apple have agreed to allow me to buy a new Mac on HE prices. Which means instead of a grand for the basic 20″ IMac I can get it with 2 GB ram and a 3 year warranty for just over 1k and I get 6 months to pay it off - interest free. Soooooooo tempting to blow my promotion and pay rise on it
They are also a bit more joined up than most companies it seems. I gave my email address to their sales droid and he instantly said my full name and asked if I was still at the same address. Slightly confused by this I asked him how he knew this and he said that apparantly I signed up to iTunes a couple of years back and that all Apple systems share customer databases. Impressive (if not a little scary…)
