It’s that time of year again. Get the pistols ready…
Tomorrow is a big event in the horse lovers world. No, I don’t mean Camillas wedding but the Grand National. I’ve nothing against horse racing but I personally really don’t like the Grand national. Making fences deliberately to decept horses that are jumping (putting hidden ditches on the far side etc etc) just seems a little unfair on the animals. Sure horses occasionally die during races but the Grand national seems to be making this just a little too likely for my liking. I know they have improved things somewhat (mainly after the carnage at the meeting in 2000 though) but it is still one of the most dangerous races around. I won’t be placing a bet.
Also sad news is that Rover are finally about to disappear as we know them. It’s been a long time coming but given that all of their best models have been siphoned off to other companies over the years all they have been left with is what is basically the crap that no one else wanted. It was always hard to see how Pheonix where ever going to make a go of it. Indeed, it does make me wonder if they ever had plans to make it work or were just looking for a quick buck. 40 Million quid for a 10 pound investment doesn’t sound bad.
IMHO, Rover is too big to survive as a British car manufacturer. Small, specialized companies making wierd and wonderful cars (TVR, Aston etc) can stick it but something as big and lumbersome as the dregs of Austin Rover has no chance against Ford and GM. It’s too big yet too small at the same time. It falls into the nomans land of the car industry
