Hot cross bun survey

As a kid I always remember hot cross buns as being rather nice. They had some fruit (not too much - not too little) and they had a sensible amount of spice. I also seem to remember the bakers delivering them on the bread van (long since gone sadly :-().

As a result of this I have been testing out hotcross buns in an attempt to find a decent one this year. Somewhat disappointing results.

  • Tesco:
    • Pre packed buns a disappointment. Not bad value at 12 for a quid (BOGOF) but too much fruit (particularly sultanas). They smell lovely and spicy but don’t actually appear to have any flavour. Sniffing them in the shop I thought I was onto a winner - sadly not :-(
    • In store Bakery buns not too bad. Reasonable price, a hint of spice (needs more really) and about the right amount of fruit. Will buy more to test more thoroughly
    • Tesco finest buns. At 4 for a quid these are the most expensive sampled so far. Disappointing. In an attempt to justify the finest tag they have been stuffed full of all sorts of crap like orange zest and lemon. Whats that all about?? Not good.
  • Sainsburys:

    • Pre packed buns appear to have been packed before adding the flavour. I suspect the packaging would be more tasty. Not a winner
    • In store bakery buns. Better that the pre packed but still not great. Just taste like bread rolls with currants in.
  • Safeways:
    • Instore bakery buns. Not too bad. They have the right flavour just not very strong. A good attempt
  • Asda
    • Instore bakery buns. The winner so far! Cheap, spicy and fruity. Still not as spicy as I would like but not to shabby at all. Shame I don’t have a local asda (although that could be a good thing - eating 6 hot cross buns a day is probably something I ought to stop :))

My quest continues…

yeah. Might have a go at that if I get chance. Used to do it prechildren - just seems a lot of hassle with a 3 year old helping :)
